Everhard Zwart (August 5, 1958)

Grandson of the legendary Jan Zwart; pupil of Feike Asma,

Everhard Zwart allready obtained a great reputation  as an organist,

on the one hand by his enthousiastic diligence for the “Dutch Choralemusic”,

for which the base was laid by his grandfather,

on the other hand by his virtuoso interpretation of many great compositions

in the organliterature.

Organ and study:

He received his first organ lessons in his early years from his father, Willem Hendrik Zwart - he was the organist of the Bovenkerk in Kampen - and soon after that he continued these lessons (chorale and literature) from Feike Asma - organist at Maassluis -. After finishing "gymnasium" (a combination high-school and junior-high)  he studied organ at the conservatory, in Utrecht at first and later on in Rotterdam, where he finished his studies succesfully in 1983. From 1979 he was the organist of the Christian Reformed Bergsingelkerk in Rotterdam. In 1983 and 1984 he was invited to follow the international master course (interpretation and improvisation)  from the well-known organ virtuoso Jean Guillou. In 1987 he studied with the German organist Günther Kaunzinger at Wurzburg. (Organ symphonies by Widor and Vierne and improvisation.)

His first organ concert was in the summer of 1979 in the Old Church of Zandvoort. His international debute as a recital-organist was made in 1983 in Barcelona (Spain), after that, he regularly gave recitals in various countries of Europe. In 1987 he became the first organist of the Dutch Reformed “Nieuwe Westerkerk” at Capelle a/d/ IJssel.

Organ and Church:

At Sunday he plays the organ during both services.

On weekly days he comes to his organ for study.

He only stops his study for a nice cup of coffee with 'koster Arie'

Organ and repertory:

Everhard Zwart thanks his reputation to  his very broad repertory. His predilection tends to the French-romantic organ literature of –among others- Widor, Vierne, Guilmant, Franck; beside that he is a majestic interpreter of Bach, Reger, Liszt and other well-known  composers like Händel or Mendelsohn and the more contemporary Andriessen. This  versatility has become his trademark. An arrangement of his Grandfather, Jan Zwart, of his father Willem Hendrik Zwart or his teacher Feike Asma will be never missing in his concert program.

Organ and recitals:

Everhard Zwart now has built a special concert practice. All  year he is giving concerts throughout the country.  He also accompanies choirs or soloists regularly.

During his recitals Everhard is usually assisted with  the registration. Together with his wife Marjan, but also with daughter Henrike and son Hidde  the concerts are executed as a family matter.

Most concerts are given in the summer. See Concert page.

Beginning in 1985 he yearly makes a concert tour through the United States of America. At first it was mainly in California, but soon after that his journey’s were extended with concerts in other states. Canada is visited regularly too.

March 2004, Florida USA

Very special was his tour through the Netherlands with Tom Parkers “New London Chorale” with among others: Vicky Brown and Madeline Bell, where he performed as a  guest organist of “The New London Orchesra”. The Christmas concerts with choirs and various soloists like “The Deep River Quartet”, Oscar Harris, Glenda Peters and Ira Spaulding are unique.

Organ and Choirs:

Everhard Zwart, the musician, is not only a well-known organist. He is also the conductor of a few  Choirs in the region of Rotterdam.

There is also an  ensemble for special occasions, as wedding services, funeral services and  ceremonies in crematoria.

At the same time he conducts the “Rotterdam Church Chorale”; this is a choir, of which the members are gathered from his other choirs and made concert tours through the USA.

Organ and family:

Just like it was in the family of his father Willem Hendrik Zwart, it has become a habit in the family of Everhard to make music together.  Giving recitals is not a matter of the organist only.

Together with his wife Marjan, daughter Henrike and son Hidde, they “experience” the concerts.

This way the organist is never lonely. Marjan is already doing the registration since one of the first recitals.

Together they made various concert tours and learned to know the visitors of the recitals.

Daughter Henrike showed her musical talent when she was very young.

She attends violin lessons since her third year.

Henrike finished Gymnasium in 2004 and is studying Medicine at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. In the summer of 2007 she followed a clinical exchange program in Estonia at

the University of Tartu.

Because of her study she stopped her violin lessons. But she is still playing. She started a group/band named mARKand. They accompanied in their church.

Henrike writes al the arrangements for mARKand.

Son Hidde decided to change the piano –after a short period-  to playing the trumpet. He enjoys receiving lessons from a private teacher, is a member of the local band “Concordia”  and is also playing by mARKand. In september 2007 he started as a conductor by a new Childens choir. He finished HAVO in 2006 and is studying for Prime-school teacher.

With two musical children and a husband who is a more than fulltime musician, Marjan decided not to play an instrument. As a funeral manager she works part-time in the Rotterdam-Capelle-Krimpen region.

Her musical hobby is to sing. She and her daughter Henrike are enthousiastic members of "Concertante" .

Marjan is also a member of the choir "River Voices" and is active in the board of the "Rotterdam Church Chorale"- foundation.
